Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe expects to remain friends with Harry Redknapp once Portsmouth agree compensation to bring the former Saints boss back to Fratton Park.
Redknapp is expected to rejoin Pompey, who he left a year ago, after walking out at St Mary's over the weekend, but he will not be unveiled until an agreement is made between the clubs.
"In order for him to go to Portsmouth he will need to have our approval of the release," Lowe said.
Redknapp was not in charge for Southampton's 1-1 draw against Burnley on Saturday, and Lowe was still waiting for a formal offer from Pompey that evening.
Despite Redknapp's sudden departure, Lowe believes he will remain on good terms with Redknapp.
"I've spoken to Harry a lot recently, we have a good relationship," Lowe said.
However, Lowe is still puzzled why Redknapp would choose to return to rivals Pompey, adding: "I found the whole thing bizarre. He called us a proper club he joined us. Why would he then want to go back to Portsmouth? Why would Portsmouth, having said what they said, want him back?"
