Some of the world’s top sports stars have been travelling in style after MG supplied a fleet of vehicles to the Jamaican and USA Track and Field training camps.
Athletes, including sprint stars Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay, have been ferried to and fro around the city in the Longbridge-built MG6 GT fastback and Magnette sports saloons, which were loaned to the camps to help the athletes get around during their stay.
An added special touch by MG saw the cars emblazoned with the Jamaican and USA national flags.
Both camps have been based in Birmingham in the run-up to the Olympics, with the Jamaicans based at the University of Birmingham’s Munrow Sports Centre and the Americans at the city’s Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr.
Some of the athletes were also scheduled to visit MG Motor UK’s site in Lowhill Lane to see where the MG6 was designed and engineered, and where final assembly also takes place.
Gary Egan, MG’s senior operations manager, said: “We are very proud to support both the Jamaican and American training camps. The MG6 cars will swallow all their kit bags with ease and the cars will help them get around Birmingham in comfort and style.”
Both the Americans and Jamaicans attended a special service at St Philip’s Cathedral and were given a civic reception at the Council House.
The Jamaican team also enjoyed a welcome dinner at the University of Birmingham and were guests of honour at a Jamaican 50th anniversary concert at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.
