An ambitious project to supply the West Midlands with local produce is be launched after gaining £90,000 in funding.

Dozens of farmers have joined forces for the Green Grocer project, which will see produce currently available at farm shops and farmers' markets delivered to homes in parts of the region.

The project has established a distribution centre at Badsey, near Evesham, and has already secured contracts to deliver boxes to workers at several offices in the region.

Graham Collier, one of the farmers leading the project, said: "We have eight office sites who have expressed an interest in participating in a delivery scheme to office workers.

"There is a lot of interest but localness itself will not sell the products, they have to be distinctive, high quality and priced correctly."

Farmers are being urged to take part in the project, which will help increase the amount of locally-produced food available in the region.

Mr Collier said the initiative would help producers expand their business opportunities by opening up new markets that they would find hard to achieve on their own, and giving them a better return than they could get from most of their wholesale outlets.
