This is the sight that greeted stunned railway passengers as they travelled through Staffordshire - a youth gambling with his life by dangling from an overhead power cable.

The incident happened on the main London to Scotland railway line about half a mile south of Tamworth earlier this month.

Pc Rob Newman, from British Transport Police, said: "The actions of this young man were quite unbelievable.

"The overhead cables carry 25,000 volts and, although they had been switched off to deal with another incident closer to the station, a residual current of at least 5,000 volts would have still been running through them. There is no way he could have known that the overhead lines had been switched off, because the train was standing at a red signal.

"Under normal circumstances either my colleagues or myself would be going to tell his family that he had been killed.

"It is imperative that we locate this man before he tries it again or others copy him thinking it is safe because he did not get injured."
