Title-chasing Lancashire are battling to stave off a second Championship loss in a row.
They conceded a first-innings lead of 197 to Nottinghamshire as they were shot out for 200 on the second day at Trent Bridge. Lancashire reached 93 for one before Ryan Sidebottom and Andrew Harris took three wickets apiece. The visitors reduced Notts to 94 for five in their second innings, Glen Chapple taking three for 28.
Former Lancashire captain John Crawley scored 173 as Hampshire built up a lead of 298 over Yorkshire at the Rose Bowl. Michael Carberry was dismissed for 99 before Crawley reached 1,000 runs for the season in Hampshire's 493. Leg-spinner Mark Lawson took six for 150.
Graham Onions ensured Durham left Middlesex in trouble at Lord's. Durham lost their last four wickets cheaply but their 409 was looking more than enough by the close. Onions took five for 45 as Middlesex crashed to 176 all out and followed on. Onions took another as Middlesex slipped to ten for one.
In Division Two, Glamor-gan's Mike Powell fell one short of a maiden triple century against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham. His 299 came off 479 balls with 38 fours and two sixes. James Franklin added 94 in 647 for seven. Craig Spearman is 84 not out in a reply of 122 for one.
David Sales hit 225 as Northamptonshire posted 660 for five against Essex at Wantage Road. Sales hit 22 fours and seven sixes in a 301-ball innings. Lance Klusener was 124 not out before Essex reached to 113 for three.
