Mr Ali's father, Choudhry Maherban Ali, has lived in Britain for more than 40 years. Originally from the Mirpur area of Pakistan, he is a local Labour Party activist and described as a respected member of the community.

Neighbours in the quiet residential road lined with three-storey Victorian houses spoke of their shock at the death.

Mohammed Akrim, a market researcher who lives in Oakwood Road, said: "It is a quiet street and a really nice area. I was really shocked to find out what happened here.

"I didn't even know anything about it until I got up this morning and spoke to my neighbours.

"We have never had anything like this happen around here before."
