Black Country actress Julie Walters collected her honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University in a ceremony at Symphony Hall.

The Smethwick-born star, who turns 61 today (February 22), joined hundreds of other students from the university’s Faculty of Health for the ceremonies on Monday.

Former nurse Julie shot to fame in 1983 in Oscar-nominated film Educating Rita, which told the story of a working class girl taking on an Open University degree.

Also honoured with an Alumni of the Year award was former X Factor finalist Rhydian Roberts, who graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire, part of Birmingham City University, in 2007.

And receiving an honorary doctorate was former health chief of NHS South Birmingham and West Midlands Health Authority Cynthia Bower.
