Harry Potter author JK Rowling has been named the celebrity world's ninth highest earner, raking in £77 a minute.

Her tales of the boy wizard and accompanying endorsement deals made the writer £41 a minute last year, according to US business magazine Forbes.

Rowling is the only non-American on the list, topped by Hollywood director and producer Steven Spielberg.

Forbes estimates Spielberg, whose recent projects include War of the Worlds and Munich, made £180 million in 2005, or £342 every minute.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates remained the overall richest man in the world, with a net worth of £27 billion.

If he makes a seven per cent return on investment - the average amount the stock market appreciates each year - he earns £3,601 a minute, according to Forbes.

Hannah Clark added: "While celebrities sometimes venture into nine-figure territory, their paycheques don't even come close to the sums earned in the business world."
