Detectives in Shrewsbury are appealing for sightings of a stolen construction vehicle which was used to smash through a wall during an attempted robbery.

The JCB tele-handler was taken from a Persimmon Homes building site in Ditherington before being used to break into industrial premises in Lancaster Road, Shrewsbury.

But the offenders, who also had access to a black Audi car, fled empty-handed after the offence on Tuesday night.

Detective Inspector Mick Homden, of West Mercia Police, said officers had established that the vehicle, which is similar in appearance to a JCB digger, was stolen at around 5.30pm.

The detective said: "It is likely to have been driven up Ditherington Road, turning left into Mount Pleasant Road and then right into Lancaster Road - a distance of about a mile.

"This is a built-up area and it was at a busy time of day.

"I am appealing for anyone who spotted it as it was being taken to Lancaster Road to contact Shrewsbury police station on 0300 333 3000."
