As far as tourist attractions go, it's not one you would be likely to find in any guide book.

But for those in the know, Birmingham is home to one of the finest roundabouts in the country.

Unsurprisingly, it's not the mammoth monstrosity of Spaghetti Junction, but the Spitfire Island (below) located outside the Jaguar car plant in Castle Bromwich.

The traffic system, with its distinctive steel sculpture of three Spitfires, is set to feature in a new calendar on Britain's best roundabouts.

The calendar is being produced by roundabout enthusiast Kevin Beresford, president of the UK Roundabout Appreciation Society.

Mr Beresford's first calendar, Roundabouts of Redditch, launched in 2002, proved a runaway success, selling 60,000 copies.

The Spitfire Island came second behind the Pepperbox Hill roundabout in Swindon, Wiltshire.

It was constructed to mark the heritage of the Castle Bromwich site as a wartime production centre for the iconic spitfire fighter plane.

National recognition could do for the island what the opening credits of Ricky Gervais' hit TV sitcom The Office did for the Brunel Bridge roundabout in Slough.
