Street Ice is back in Birmingham this month.

The city centre ice rink will cover about 1000sq metres in Centenary Square, taking up the spot the Wheel previously occupied.

Organisers said the inspiration for this year's Street Ice was the rink in Madison Square Gardens in New York.

Trees will be strewn with fairy lights and an adjacent bar and cafe with cushioned seats and tables will provide a viewing area or a destination it its own right for non-skaters.

"Street Ice will be bigger and better this year," said spokes-woman for T-Mobile, sponsors of the event. "We want the whole thing to have a magical quality to it.

"The cafe area will be ideal for families, offering an alternative venue than the pub for people to visit in the city centre."
