The popular outdoor ice rink is making a return to Birmingham city centre after a six-year absence.

Visitors to the city this winter will be able to get their skates on in the festive surroundings of Centenary Square from Sunday November 17.

The Square last hosted the street ice rink in 2007, but it was replaced by the big wheel, before the Square became the building site for the Library of Birmingham.

Now the rink is back and will open in the same week as the Frankfurt Christmas Market to provide an added attraction for visitors.

Called Winterskate, the 600 sq metre rink will be open for business from 10am to 10pm daily until January 5.

Council deputy leader Ian Ward, said: “It’s been six years since we last had an ice rink as part of our Christmas celebrations and I’m really pleased that Wilsons Funfair are able to offer this opportunity in Centenary Square close to the stunning new Library of Birmingham.

“Visitors to Birmingham and locals alike will be able to enjoy the magic of open air ice skating in our festive ice rink throughout the season.”

The rink can accommodate up to 220 skaters at a time. Tickets can be booked in advance via the website www.winterskate.co.uk with peak and off peak rates available.

The ice rink is part of Birmingham’s season of city centre winter festivities.

Opening the season is the Christmas lights switch-on and Christmas Parade at 5.30pm on Saturday, November 9.

Then on Thursday, November 14 the Frankfurt Christmas Market, now in its 12th year, officially opens for business with its selection of festive food and crafts.
