Detectives hunting the mother of a newborn baby girl found dead in a river carried out roadside checks yesterday.

The body was found in a plastic bag in Aston Cantlow, near Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire.

Officers asked motorists and passers-by in the area if they had seen anything unusual.

The baby's body was discovered last Thursday evening by a family walking alongside the River Alne.

Post-mortem tests on the cause of death were inconclusive and forensic work is continuing.

Detective Inspector Richard Long of Warwickshire Police, said: "I feel sure someone who lives locally has seen something, or perhaps heard something unusual, or out of place which could assist the inquiry.

"I appeal to anyone who has information even if they feel it may be irrelevant to make contact. The information could give us a new lead."
