Hundreds of people have come forward to a hotline and webpage set up by tyre giant Michelin to find stained glass windows missing from its iconic Michelin House building.

Michelin issued an amnesty two weeks ago in hope of reclaiming the three missing original stained glass windows that once belonged to the Art Deco inspired building on the Fulham Road, London.

The newly developed page and hotline has proved busy with calls and tip-offs from across the UK that are helping to gain information on the current location of the windows.

Michelin set up the hotline and webpage to allow people to submit clues anonymously, to try to recover the windows in time for the Michelin House centenary celebrations in January.

There has been an average of more than 300 visits to the website daily, and a number of phone calls since the amnesty was first announced.

A spokesman for the firm said the hotline and web pages were “hot with rumour and speculation”.

Little is known about the whereabouts of the windows however, it is thought they were last seen at Michelin storage facilities in the 1980s.

Callers so far have reported potential sightings in Australia and the South East.

Peter Snelling, Michelin’s UK head of communications, said: “We have had an excellent response to our appeal and some of the information we have been receiving makes us believe we are getting closer to finding out the whereabouts of the windows.

“There has been some really useful information supplied, but what we need now is that final specific call or website message that takes us directly to the stained glass windows.

“The amnesty now gives the chance for those who know what happened to come forward and end the mystery once and for all.”

The original stained glass windows were removed and transported to Stoke-on-Trent where they were stored for protection following the outbreak of World War II in 1939. A post-war audit at Michelin’s Stoke-on-Trent site revealed the windows to be missing, and despite rumours surrounding supposed sightings in the 1960s, they remain unreturned.

The confidential amnesty webpage has been set up on the Michelin website at www.michelin.co.uk/amnesty. Information relating to the missing windows can be left anonymously and will be forwarded to Michelin’s Missing Windows Investigations Team. Any clues or leads can also be left on the confidential phone line at 01782 402118.
