The organisers of a charity giveaway for community groups in south Birmingham, have been overwhelmed by the response after offering £10,000 worth of grants.

Moseley Round Table's Ten For 2010 grant giveaway, launched two weeks ago, has already received more than 40 requests from local charities and community groups.

The cash sum is largest amount that Moseley Round Table has been able to donate in one go and the group is hoping it will help local organisations that may be feeling the pinch from the economic downturn.

Moseley Round Table were able to offer the sum following a successful annual fireworks event last November.

As part of the build up to the grand final, Moseley Round Table is looking to highlight the work of some of the charities and community groups that are seeking its support.

Among those that have already applied for a grant is the Stonehouse Gang, a Selly Oak-based youth project founded in 1938.

It attracts 300 children and young people a week and has contacted Moseley Round Table to fund snooker and air hockey tables, as their current ones have fallen into disrepair.

Edward Road Baptist Church in Balsall Heath is also seeking funding for a brass handrail to the entrance of the church to assist the elderly and disabled members of the congregation.

Edgbaston-based Sport 4 Life is also hoping to be successful in its request for a grant to support a dance programme for girls aged eight to 16 on the Stockfield Estate in Acocks Green.

Moseley Round Table chairman Mark Wilkinson said: "The response so far has been incredible and having sent a number of forms out, we're waiting for them to flood back in.

"The enquiries have been from a wide range of organisations and from across all of south Birmingham. With almost two months until the deadline, I expect we'll have some tough decisions to make."

The Ten For 2010 initiative closes on April 2. A select number of groups will be invited to attend the grand final on April 17, where a panel will listen to all the applicants before deciding how to share out the £10,000. All of those attending the finale will get a share of the £10,000.

Organisations are not restricted to how much they can request but must fulfil the criteria on the application form.
