After two years at the club Pertemps Bees have released hooker Alan Hubbleday from his contract at Sharmans Cross Road.

The former England Colts and England Schools international, who is a product of King Edward VI School, Five Ways, joined Bees from Birmingham rivals Moseley in 2003 and was a first-team squad regular until this season.

But the arrival of Wales Under-21 international Matt Miles from Northampton increased competition for places and, having been squeezed out, Hubbleday has spent the season on loan at Aston OE and, most recently, Stourbridge.

Hubbleday might have thought there was a way back for him with Bees after Rob Merritt, Miles's regular understudy this year, announced that he would retire at the end of the current season but Bees are also in the process of converting former Leicester flanker Ben Gerry into a hooker.

With nothing to play for in the remainder of the season, director of rugby, Phil Maynard, has declared his intention to blood some of his younger players in preparation for the next campaign and that means Gerry will get a run in the side.

Maynard said: "With two hookers in the squad already and Ben Gerry coming back from a loan spell with Dudley Kingswinford, we felt that Alan's first-team opportunities were going to be limited.

"He has been a loyal servant of the club and we thank him for his contribution to the club's success, particularly last season when he was a valued member of the squad that reached the semifinals of the Powergen Cup and fourth place in National One."

Gerry has spent three months on loan at DK where he had begun his career as a specialist hooker and he made his debut for Bees in that position as a replacement in the league defeat at Coventry last month.

Gerry was recalled from a loan spell for the Coventry game and the Powergen Cup defeat at Leeds Tykes, where he was an unused replacement, in December. He is expected to spend the rest of the season in Solihull.

He is in line to start against Rotherham on Saturday because Miles was one of many players who disappointed in last Saturday's Powergen Shield semi-final defeat by Bedford.

Former London Irish, Perpignan and Bristol winger Simon Hunt is also in line for a recall along with flanker Tom Jordan, who had a spell on loan with National Two club Stourbridge earlier in the season.

A decision on whether centre Shaun Woof will be fit to face Rotherham will be taken after he has been assessed by the club's medical staff this week.

Woof suffered whiplash injuries to his neck against Bedford and had to be stretchered off early in the second half. He was discharged from hospital on Saturday evening.
