Housewife Vanessa Glennan turned midwife to deliver the baby son born to her neighbour Lisa Wareham.
The 32-year-old motherof-three stepped in after Lisa rang her at 2am when her contractions started at home in Cheswick Green, Solihull. Lisa thought she had plenty of time to get to hospital and wanted Vanessa to baby-sit her two-year-old son Lewis.
But as husband Stuart, a 35- year- old carpenter, started to defrost the car to take Lisa to hospital, Vanessa realised the baby was coming quicker than she thought and ushered her back inside the house at Beechwood Close.
Vanessa sat Lisa on the living room floor while she called an ambulance, but was told there was no time and she would have to deliver the baby herself.
So Vanessa stayed on the phone to a 999 operator who talked her through the delivery - and ten minutes later baby Owen was born weighing 7lb 15oz.
Vanessa said: "It just happened so quickly, it was amazing but really odd. I just went into auto pilot. It is really special to do something like that. People keep on coming up to me in the village and congratulating me."
Housewife Lisa, a former childminder, said: " Vanessa was brilliant, I don't know what I would have done without her."
