A businessman who plunged from a hotel balcony with his two children was a "caring father" his wife said yesterday.
John Hogan, aged 32, is facing a possible murder charge after his six-year-old son Liam died and his daughter Mia, two, was injured during the fall in Crete.
In a statement the Hogan family, from Bradley Stoke, Bristol, said his actions were "completely out of character".
Hogan's wife Natasha, aged 34, returned to the UK on Friday after Mia was released from hospital following treatment for a broken arm.
The family released details about Liam's funeral, which will be held at the Holy Trinity Church in Bradley Stoke on Tuesday next week.
It is unlikely that John Hogan will be back in the UK for the service, the family said.
The statement read: "John remains in hospital in Crete and it has still not been possible to speak with him in order to discuss in detail exactly what happened.
"Our thoughts are with him as he recovers from his injuries. It's unlikely that he will be in the UK for the service.
"Natasha Hogan would like to set the record straight with reference to the huge amount of misreporting on this incident.
"On the day in question, John was sober, having consumed no alcohol. His action is felt to have been completely out of character for the caring father that he was to both Liam and Mia.
"We would like to thank the press for showing restraint and hope that this continues in the coming days and weeks as our family comes to terms with our loss."
The news came as the Foreign Office denied reports that Hogan had gone on hunger strike.
Hogan is under police guard in hospital in the island's capital Heraklion after suffering a broken arm, leg and chest injuries in the incident.
It was reported yesterday that he had gone on hunger strike, but a Foreign Office spokeswoman said he was "depressed".
Police investigating the fall have to wait until doctors treating Hogan, from Bradley Stoke, Bristol, say he is fit enough to be formally interviewed.
The Foreign Office spokes-woman said: "He has not been arrested yet.
"He is not on hunger strike. Apparently he is just depressed and not really hungry.
