Staff at a Birmingham hospital will collect a prestigious award today for saving the life of a premature baby who contracted Ecoli and MRSA.

Harris Gashi weighed just 865g when he was born at 26 weeks at City Hospital.

While being treated in the neonatal unit he caught pneumonia and became dependent on a ventilator.

The team of specialist paediatric nurses who cared for Harris will collect their MUM - Maternity Unit Miracle - award during a ceremony at the National Motorcycle Museum, in Bickenhill, Solihull.

His mother Susan Gashi, who nominated her son's "guardian angels" for the prize, said: "My husband and myself never gave up hope.

"I think this was due to the outstanding care and commitment of the whole team at City Hospital."

Eight other regional winners will collect their awards at the event, hosted by Emma Forbes and Nick Owen, before the overall winning hospital is announced.
