Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger has spoken out about his unlikely brawl with Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose.
Celebrity watchers reported with some surprise last month that diminutive Hilfiger had hit the rocker at a New York nightclub.
Rose claimed the designer "just kept smacking" him after he moved the 55-year-old's girlfriend's drink, worrying that it might get spilt.
Hilfiger said: "I was just protecting myself.
"He was being rude and obnoxious, and I just told him to cool it. I went after him before he could get me."
The singer was at the club to play a surprise set at Hollywood actress Rosario Dawson's 27th birthday party.
He dedicated the song You're Crazy to his "good friend Tommy Hilfiger".
