Some of Birmingham’s most recognisable councillors suffered crushing blows as Conservatives and Liberal Democrats lost out to Labour throughout the city.

Conservative councillors Les Lawrence (Northfield), Matt Bennett (Stockland Green), John Alden (Harborne) and Len Gregory (Billesley) were all outsted in a tough night for the party.

Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat cabinet members Martin Mullaney (Moseley and Kings Heath) and Ayoub Khan (Aston) lost their seats.

Many lost by large margins, paying a local price locally as the Government nationally suffers in the polls.

Cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture Mr Mullaney fell more than 1,000 votes, after taking a total of 2,137 in the Moseley and Kings Heath ward, while Labour’s Lisa Trickett received 3,432.

Coun Khan, the cabinet member for local services and community safety, also lost out to Labour, taking 3,123 votes in comparison to the 3,567 secured by Nagina Kauser.

In a tough night for the Conservatives, Coun Lawrence – the cabinet member for children, young people and families – was edged out by a mere 61 votes in Northfield. He took a total of 2,177, while Labour candidate Brett O’Reilly secured 2,238.

However, councillor Coun Bennett, cabinet member children’s social care, fell well short of the 2,457 votes taken by Labour candidate Josh Jones in Stockland Green, taking only 1,527.

Coun Alden, who first became a councillor in 1983, suffered a major blow in the Conservative stronghold of Harborne. A total of 2,441 people voted for him, but again the seat was lost to Labour with Elaine Valerie Williams receiving 3,264 votes.

In Billesley, Coun Gregory lost out to Labour candidate Phil Davies, who enjoyed 2,586 votes compared to Coun Gregory’s 1,749.

The new council in Birmingham is now made up of 77 from Labour, 28 from the Conservatives and 15 Liberal Democrats.
