The Environment Agency has started work on a r efurbishment of a Shropshire fish pass allowing salmon to return to spawning grounds on the Severn.
The project at Shrewsbury Weir - launched after it emerged the structure is failing - will be completed before the end of May, when salmon return to the river.
The pass is a series of pools dividing the large fall of water into smaller falls.
The Agency's fisheries and recreation team leader, Mike Exeter, said: "With salmon populations d eclining, it is very important the fish can get back to their spawning grounds upstream so they have the best chance to breed. We have a duty to ensure that the fish pass is in good condition.
"Having identified that there seems to be a problem, we will do our best to refurbish the fish pass in time for this year's salmon run." ..SUPL:
