About 50 firefighters were called out to a blaze at a shoe shop in Harborne High Street on Thursday morning.
Crews were called out to Stead & Simpson after the fire broke out in a rear store room at around 5.55am.
By 11am a spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said they were scaling back their operation after the fire was extinguished.
He added: "All of the two-storey, mid-terrace shoe shop has been affected by fire, including the roof. The fire appears to have started in a rear storeroom, but is now out.
"The premises are in a row of seven, brick-built shops, and the fire spread to the roof space of a neighbouring chemist.
"Resources still at the scene include two hydraulic platforms, which are being used to strip away some roof tiles and to check on hot spots.
"Colleagues from West Midlands Police have been assisting with local road closures while we deal with the incident, and we’re grateful to people who live, work and travel locally for their patience.
"As many as 50 firefighters have been at the scene, and our fire investigation experts will be looking into the cause."
