While Europe’s top golfers were re-claiming the Ryder Cup, rising golf stars from Birmingham were busy creating history of their own.

About one hundred miles east of the glitz and glamour of Celtic Manor, six talented teenagers from Harborne Golf Club qualified for the National finals of the Junior Team Golf Home Nations Inter-Club Championship for the first time ever.

The six-strong team of under-18s finished second in the regional finals held at Studley Wood Golf Club, Oxfordshire, to progress to their highest ever stage.

Sky Sports cameras will now follow the juniors around the tricky McDonald Portal course in Cheshire during the finals on October 25.

After watching the teenagers progress, junior organiser Ian Humphreys says the sky is the limit for the successful side.

“The kids are absolutely delighted and it’s great to be a part of their success,” said Ian, who has worked with the junior team for the past five years.

“Monday was a great day with Europe winning the Ryder Cup as well.

“At Harborne we’ve only got a small junior section which makes this achievement even better.

“There are about 12 juniors at the club so for them to do so well is excellent.

“I think there have been ten players who have all played their part in helping the team get to where they are now.

“It’s been tough for me to leave some out especially as we were only allowed six players in the last round. However, every time they have stepped out on to the golf course they have performed and I’m delighted for them.

“After coming this far they want to go all the way now.”

The epic stroke-play adventure started in April when Harborne topped their zone of the West Midlands Junior Golf League.

From there they went on to the West Midlands finals at Bromsgrove Golf Club, where they qualified for the regional finals.

On Monday they secured their passage to the National finals, which will see the youngsters take on 11 other regional champions from across the country.

Should they prevail, a trip to the impressive Polaris World La Torre Golf Resort in Spain lies ahead where Harborne would represent England in the Home Nations Inter-Club Championship final.

The 18-hole course was designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus and the resort features thousands of luxury homes and apartments.

“Getting to the overall finals in Spain was unthinkable a few months ago,” added Ian. “To represent England would be fantastic for the players and the club. We’re hoping for the best.”
