Investigations were being carried out yesterday after a hanglider was killed and a paraglider seriously injured in the space of four hours at a Midland beauty spot.

Detectives said 25-year-old Ross Barlow died when his glider swooped 60ft and smashed into the Long Mynd, near Church Stretton, Shropshire, just before 3pm on Sunday.

Fewer than four hours earlier at the same spot, a paraglider suffered severe back injuries after being forced to make a crash landing. The man, in his forties, was airlifted to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

West Mercia Police, the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (BHPA) are investigating the crashes, which are not believed to be linked.

Mr Barlow, who was from Horton in Bristol, died shortly after being taken to hospital. A postmortem is expected to be carried out today.

Dave Wootton, from the BHPA, said: "These pilots were both qualified with the BHPA. The team will speak to eye witnesses, look at the airworthiness of the glider, how long he had been qualified, whether there was a malfunction and the weather conditions at the time of the accident."

No one from the Midland Gliding Club, which is near the scene of the crash, was available for comment yesterday.
