The 12th Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Final generated £1.8 million for the regional economy when it was staged in Birmingham last December, a new study reveals.

The analysis of spending by spectators, competitors, officials and the media was carried out by independent consultants during the event, which was staged at the National Indoor Arena.

Supported by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands, the event was sold out on both days with nearly 12,000 spectators attending.

It was the largest gymnastics audience achieved in the UK and all the top stars from the sport attended.

Coun John Alden (Con Harborne), the city council Cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture, said: "The economic impact that this report has revealed clearly demonstrates the benefit to the city of staging major sports events.

"However, the benefits are not just economic as hosting international events such as this raises the city's status and profile across the globe and could well inspire the sports stars of the future."
