A 16-year-old girl was killed and another teenager is critically ill after the car they were travelling in crashed into a wall in Coventry.

The driver of the VW Golf, a 19-year-old man, was also seriously injured in the accident at about 6.55am on Sunday, West Midlands Police said.

No other vehicle was involved in the incident, which happened on Ringway Queens.

"One person died following the collision - a 16-year-old female passenger from Coventry, who is not being named at this stage," a police spokeswoman said.

"The driver, a 19-year-old man from Coventry, is detained in hospital in a serious condition.

"Another passenger, a 17-year-old male from Coventry, suffered serious injuries and is detained in a critical condition in hospital, and a third passenger, an 18-year-old man, suffered slight injuries and was not detained."
