The longest running transfer saga of the summer is over - for good. Gareth Barry will be staying at Aston Villa.

According to a statement released by his agent, Alex Black, England international Barry has informed Villa of his intention to play out the season with the club after long-term suitors Liverpool failed to find the £18 million Villa were demanding.

“Gareth made a decision to stay two weeks ago and informed Aston Villa of his intentions,” read the statement. “During this time discussions have taken place to decide the best way forward for all parties. Any talks regarding a potential new contract and Aston Villa will not be taking place until the end of the season.

“Gareth wants to concentrate on playing to the best of his ability this season, we hope this draws a line under the matter.”

Barry was fined and suspended by Villa in July after publicly pleading for a move to Anfield and criticising manager Martin O’Neill, and was subject to a lukewarm reception from the club’s fans in the early part of pre-season.

However, after being stripped of the captaincy, he has been well received in more recent games and will now look to fully restore his reputation at the club.
