Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry has been ruled out Sunday's FA Cup fifth-round clash against Everton at Goodison Park through suspension.

The England player, currently captaining Villa in Martin Laursen's injury-enforced absence, received his fifth yellow card of the campaign during Saturday's 2-0 win at Blackburn.

Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and winger Ashley Young - also both in the England squad for Wednesday's friendly in Spain - are both close to being suspended.

They are currently both on four bookings apiece and will also be banned if they pick up another caution before a Football Association amnesty takes effect from the end of February.

Young has only just returned to action from serving a three-game suspension for his straight red card at Sunderland last month.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill said: "We have a number of players on four bookings and we have to try and see it through to the end of the month but that is going to be asking a lot.

"It was always going to be asking a lot of Barry, a midfielder and a combative player, to manage that. But the likes of Gabby and Ashley should be able to see it through."

O'Neill has reminded his players to avoid silly bookings for matters such as goal celebrations.  He said: "Gabby committed a foul to collect his fourth booking and you couldn't have argued. But to be booked for taking your shirt off for celebrating a goal, would be ridiculous."
