A Birmingham furniture factory was destroyed in a major blaze last night.
Flames ripped through the Tree Tops Pine Furniture in Grange Road, Kings Heath, causing pots of paint or varnish to explode.
It is believed the fire began shortly after employees left the premises when it closed at 5.30pm.
The single storey showroom and two storey workshop, which have occupied the site since 1972, were well alight when firefighters arrived.
Fire service personnel were trying to contact the firm's owner last night.
Surrounding homes were not evacuated but residents were told to keep windows and doors shut.
By 7.30pm more than 70 firefighters were tackling the flames, after initial difficulties in accessing water supplies.
Divisional Officer Bill Gough, of West Midlands Fire Service, said: "The building, due to the nature of its construction, has been destroyed. The walls were constructed of timber which assisted the spread of the fire.
"At this stage we have no idea what caused this fire but we don't expect our fire investigation team to be able to get into the building until tomorrow."
