Petrol prices in an inner-city Birmingham suburb vary by as much as 7p per litre at forecourts just two minutes’ drive from each other.
In a new survey by petrol price lobby group Staveley Head, unleaded fuel is listed at just 130.9p per litre at Tesco on Spring Hill, Hockley.
However, a litre of unleaded at the Murco station - just a couple of minutes’ motoring away in Winson Green - is a substantial 137.9p.
Based on a drivers travelling on average 10,000 miles a year, this can add up to a £120 difference in average fuel costs, according to the company’s UK Petrol Price Dashboard price indicator.
The city’s cheapest fuel reported to be 129.9p per litre at a supermarket in Castle Vale, but the most expensive retails at around 138.9p in the city centre.
Ashley Peters, Staveley Head director, said: “Travelling a few yards more down the road for petrol will save hundreds of pounds per year. It’s not just about individual savings, it’s about showing these petrol companies that we won’t accept their ludicrous prices. The message is simple; either lower your prices, or we’ll go elsewhere.”
This latest edition to the Petrol Price Index adds to existing tools that help calculate costs for drivers. The dashboard also features the national average prices for petrol and diesel, an index showing petrol price rises since 2003 and a fuel cost calculator that works out fuel consumption for specific vehicles.
