A farewell text message from a holidaymaker, who tried to kill herself in Spain, proved to be a lifeline when it was received by her friends in the Midlands.

The 21-year-old woman lay near death in a hotel room in Tenerife after swallowing pills in a suicide attempt. She had sent a text message to friends in England to say goodbye.

The message and the prompt actions of her friends saved her life.

They rushed to to their local police at Telford, Shropshire, from where officers immediately telephoned the National Police at the resort of Puerto de las Cruz on the north coast of Tenerife, where the woman was on holiday.

Squad cars and an ambulance raced to the hotel address they had been given and found her slumped on a bed. Paramedics then took over and the woman was taken to hospital.

A police spokesman in Tenerife said: "Luckily, one of our patrol cars was almost outside the hotel concerned." Last night, the woman was said to be out of danger and recovering in hospital.
