A fourth man appeared in court yesterday charged in connection with a burglary after which a policeman was stabbed with a crowbar.

Mark Billingham, from Wood End, Coventry, was remanded on bail until August 31 by magistrates in Nuneaton, Warwickshire Police said. The 24 year-old has been charged with burglary, aggravated vehicle-taking, driving while dis-qualified and driving with no insurance.

The charges relate to a burglary at the Paper Chain newsagent's in Mount Pleasant Road, Bedworth, on August 2, after which Pc Peter Doherty was critically injured.

Pc Doherty, aged 34, was stabbed in the chest with a 24-inch crowbar after he and colleagues were called to the scene. He underwent two life-saving operations and had his spleen removed.

Three men pleaded guilty to burglary on August 7 and have been remanded in custody to appear at Warwick Crown Court for sentence on September 8. Officers have issued a photograph of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the investigation into the burglary.

Mark Cavan Connolly, from the Henley Green area of Coventry, is described as dark-skinned, 5ft 9ins and of stocky build with dark hair.
