Two Birmingham schools are expected to be given the go ahead to merge next week.

Education chiefs in Birmingham are expected to allow Four Oaks Infant and Four Oaks Junior schools in Sutton Coldfield to amalgamate.

The move has been agreed by staff and the governing bodies at the two sites following the resignation of the junior school's head Jackie Bandbury.

Ms Bandbury has left to move abroad after her husband landed a new job in Germany.

Primary school amalgamations have proved a highly controversial process in Birmingham in recent years.

Until last year, infant and junior schools sharing a site were forced to close and reopen as a single school in the event of certain triggers, including the departure of one headteacher.

As a result, a number of amalgamations went ahead despite angry opposition from parents and staff.

However, after the current Conservative/Lib Dem coalition took control of the authority last year the policy - introduced by former chief education officer Tim Brighouse - was reversed.

Mergers can now only happen with the support of the school management.

Heather Sutton, headteacher of Four Oaks Primary, who is currently also standing in as head at the infants, said the move was felt to be the best way forward.

"What we are trying to do is provide the best possible education for the children across the site," she said.

The amalgamation will create a new school called Four Oaks Primary School on Edge Hill Road with a pupil population of 420.

Birmingham education chiefs are expected to give approval for the move next Monday.

Coun Les Lawrence (Con Northfield), cabinet member for education who was responsible for scrapping the policy of enforced amalgamations, said: "We are keen to reflect the views of local people and in particular the role of governors, parents and staff when determining the future of any schools."
