Olivier Bernard has been invited to join Birmingham City for their pre-season tour of Norway - and that that could pave the way to a permanent transfer.
The 25-year-old French defender is available on a free transfer after completing his short-term contract with Southampton.
Steve Bruce, the Birmingham manager, wants the former Newcastle United left back to train with the squad and play in some of the preseason matches.
Birmingham made a late attempt to sign Bernard during the January transfer window this year after he was released by Newcastle but lost out to Southampton, who were later relegated from the Barclays Premiership.
Birmingham even offered Bernard a larger salary but the player had given his word to Southampton, leaving Bruce frustrated.
However, Bruce has thawed in his attitude towards the player and seems to want a permanent deal.
