"The announcement of this brand new route clearly demonstrates our ambitions and hunger to deliver a network that meets the needs of our customers.

"We are particularly excited to be flying direct from Birmingham to Berlin is a new destination for Flybe and we know that it's an important one for both business and leisure travellers.

"It's not only a main transport hub but also the commercial centre for a wide range of industrial sectors."

Birmingham Airport chief executive Paul Kehoe added: "This expansion to their route network further strengthens the airline's commitment to the West Midlands and will undoubtedly prove to be a popular addition to their destination portfolio for holidaymakers and business travellers alike."

The airline's announcement follows recent news that it was adding new routes to Hamburg and Oslo to its 2014/15 winter schedule.
