Birmingham Repertory Theatre has appointed Rachel Kavanaugh to succeed Jonathan Church as artistic director.

Kavanaugh, who will be the first woman to hold the position in the theatre's 93-year history, is a former associate director at the Rep whose past productions have included The Wizard of Oz, Art, A Doll's House and two plays by Alan Bennett, The Lady in the Van and The Madness of George III.

She also worked with Jonathan Church on the revival of David Hare's trilogy.

She said: "I am very excited to be the new artistic director of such a vibrant theatre as the Birmingham Rep and look forward to building on Jonathan Church's success here."
