An amorous couple got more than they bargained for when they sneaked into shrubbery at Birmingham Botanical Gardens - and found themselves locked in for the night.
The couple, in their early 20s, made a beeline for the bushes as colleagues were leaving the House of Fraser Christmas Party early yesterday.
But they were left red-faced when they tried to leave the premises only to find staff had locked up for the night.
After more than two hours the embarrassed man and woman, dressed in evening wear, were forced to take drastic action and dial 999 on the man?s mobile phone.
The pair, who have not been named, were finally rescued at 4.30am when firemen scaled a garden wall at the premises to locate them, then help them out using ladders, Central Fire Station Officer Brian Farrell, who led the rescue, said: ?It was definitely one of the strangest call-outs we have ever had and was obviously very embarrassing for the couple.
?The man was dressed only in a shirt and trousers. Neither had a coat and they were very wet and cold by the time we found them.
?Thankfully the man had his mobile phone with him, otherwise they would have certainly had to stay there until the gardens officially opened at 9am this morning.
?To add to the couple?s woes, they faced a strict telling-off from the police when they got outside.
?We are not exactly sure what they were doing in there for all that time but I bet they wished they had picked the hothouse instead - it would have been much warmer.?
