A stretch of the M6 has been closed following a fatal crash in Staffordshire.

West Midlands Police said the southbound carriageway of the motorway between junctions 12 and 11A was expected to remain shut until late Tuesday morning.

Traffic was diverted from the road after a lorry crashed into a broken-down car just before junction 11 at around 3.40am.

The male driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "On arrival at the scene, crews found a car that had been on fire. Unfortunately, the person from the car had suffered fatal injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene.

"The lorry driver and his female passenger were uninjured and did not require hospital treatment."

Specialist officers from the Central Motorway Police Group and Staffordshire Police were conducting inquiries at the scene of the collision.

Any witnesses are urged to contact the Central Motorway Police Group on 0121 626 1285.
