Motorists are facing lengthy delays after a fatal accident forced police to close the M6 in Warwickshire.

The Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) said the northbound stretch of the M6 between junctions 3 and 4 was likely to remain closed for several hours after the crash near Corley Services at 4.15am.

A CMPG spokesman said a heavy goods vehicle broke down, leaving it partially stranded in lane one.

A second lorry then struck the stranded vehicle and its driver, a 52-year-old man from Bedfordshire, was confirmed dead at the scene.

It is understood the driver of the first lorry suffered a slight injury.

The CMPG spokesman said tailbacks also built up on the southbound carriageway because of "rubberneckers" slowing down at the scene.
