Two friends notched up a total of 27 A* grade GCSEs between them.

Birmingham students Mimi Li and Helen Xia, both aged 16, were overjoyed to discover they had achieved 13-and-a-half top level results each.

The King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls pupils, who took three of their GCSEs last year, said they were looking forward to celebrating their success.

Helen, from Shirley, Solihull, said: “I am really surprised. I didn’t expect to get these results.

“I was predicted three A*s and the rest As so to get this many A*s is amazing. I did work really hard for it though and did a lot of revision.”

Mimi, from Kings Heath, said: “The exams went okay but afterwards I worried I wouldn’t do well. I had my doubts.

“I did a lot of revision which has obviously paid off.”

Both pupils took Chinese, ICT (Information Communications Technology) and statistics last year.

The girls, who studied a half GCSE in religious studies, plan to stay on at the selective grammar school to study A-levels and hope to apply for the University of Cambridge.

Mimi, who plays the violin and piano in her spare time, wants to become a doctor while Helen plans to become an economist.

Headteacher Dru James said the school, in Kings Heath, had achieved its best ever results, with 80 per cent gaining As and A*s.

She said: “I am really pleased with the outcome everyone has achieved.

“The girls work really hard and we have got skilful experienced teachers who are used to trying to get the best out of the girls.”

Another high-flying student celebrating was 16-year-old Amy Young, who achieved 17 high grade GCSEs.

Amy, a pupil at Turves Green Girls’ School in Northfield, Birmingham, gained 10 A*s and seven As.

Headteacher Sara Brehony said as a whole the school had achieved “outstanding results”, which reflected hard work by staff and pupils.

She said: “This shows the school’s successful strategies to ensure pupils reach their potential and we have maintained our track record in overall school improvement.”
