A 26-year-old Birmingham man has been remanded in custody, charged with the murder of a shopkeeper who was stabbed to death at his store.

John Meenan, who is also charged with robbery, is alleged to have murdered Suppiah Tharmaseelan at his family-run convenience store in Kingstanding, late on Saturday.

Meenan, of Camberley Grove, Erdington, spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth during a five-minute appearance at Sutton Coldfield Magistrates' Court.

The defendant, who is alleged to have robbed Mr Tharmaseelan of a quantity of cigarettes, was ordered to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on Thursday.

The 48-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the stabbing at the Select Convenience Store in College Road, Kingstanding.

A man and a woman who were arrested on Sunday in connection with the robbery have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
