Aston Villa left-back Stephen Warnock admits Wayne Bridge's decision to rule himself out for England may have paved the way for his own selection to Fabio Capello's squad.

Manchester City defender Bridge released a short statement this morning claiming his presence within the national side was potentially "divisive" and that he did not wish to be selected.

The move comes after newspaper allegations about a relationship between Bridge's former partner Vanessa Perroncel and Chelsea defender John Terry.

Bridge's absence and an injury to Ashley Cole could mean a call-up for Warnock for next week's friendly against Egypt, and the 28-year-old is hoping to catch Fabio Capello's eye.

"I don't know about that (selection for the Egypt game)," he said. "That will be the manager's decision.

"He picks who he thinks is right for the job. All I can do is concentrate on my form with Villa and try and impress him.

"I thought I was pushing hard anyway but with what has happened maybe it has opened a door. Ideally it would be great to win the Carling Cup and get called up for the Egypt game but let's wait and see."
