A 'thank you letter' sent by Emma Hamilton to Timothy Smith, the Low Bailiff of Birmingham, a week after her visit to the city in August 1802.

It was sent from Merton, the home she shared with her husband and Lord Nelson. Emma had no formal education, and her writing reflected this.

Dear Sir, Horrace* has wrote in a hurry but I will not let his letter go without saying how very very sensible we all feel for your kind attentions.

Dear Birmingham I shall ever love it and it's (sic) dear kind inhabitants. Lord Nelson and Sir Wm's kind compliments and believe me dear Sir your sincere and obliged friend Emma Hamilton (* Hor(r)ace was Nelson's nephew who accompanied them on the trip)
