Defender George Elokobi has revealed how Wolverhampton Wanderers will have a head start on their Championship rivals thanks to summer fitness programmes designed by Tony Daley.
The Cameroon-born full back has reported back lighter and in better condition than the end of last season, thanks to the off-season work set by former England and Aston Villa winger Daley, who is now Wolves’ fitness coach.
Elokobi, who joined Wanderers from Colchester United in January, said he was now relishing the prospect of his first full season at Molineux.
“I stuck to my off-season programme given to us by Tony and I’ve come back in good shape,” Elokobi said. “With the work we’re doing in pre-season, we will be in even better shape and we’ll take it from there. It’s more intense here because we’re training every day or every other day and you still have enough time to recover before your next run.
“But it’s good to be back and it’s good to start working with the boys again, and I certainly feel better – I’ve lost almost three kilos (six and a half lbs) in weight compared to the end of the season which is good.
“I used to weigh 90 kilos (14st 2lbs) but I came in at 87.1 (13st 9.5lbs) which is good – I feel more mobile and athletic.”
It isn’t just his physique that Elokobi is developing. On his arrival from Layer Road, Wolves manager Mick McCarthy admitted he had signed a raw prospect but highlighted Elokobi’s immense hunger to improve his all-round game. That hunger is still there, the 22-year-old admitted.
Now Elokobi is looking to add a new attacking dimension to his play to compliment his solid defensive attributes.
“I’m looking to develop my game,” he said. “First and foremost I’m a defender, but I also want to go on the overlap more and put in decent crosses to enable the strikers and wingers to score. That can only be a bonus to me and the team and I’m looking forward to being able to do that.
“I realise there are things I need to improve on and, as a player, you can always improve until your career is over. That’s what I’m looking to do. I want to be the best out there and I will do everything in my power to be the best player out there.”
