Dear Editor, Beware of a Government bearing elected mayors.

Governments of all major parties, including the coalition, have talked of giving power to the people through elected mayors, while at the same time centralising more and more power away from our great city.

The latest budget cuts show that Yes, Minister is still alive and kicking. The only reason that I can think of in that context for an elected mayor is to make them a focus of active resistance to Whitehall and the Government.

Can we also pause and think of the fantastic work that our past and present Lord Mayors have done as ambassadors for the city and the huge amounts of money that they have raised for local charities at the same time.
