An elderly woman has died after being attacked at her home in north Birmingham.

Police discovered the 75-year-old woman with serious injuries after being called to the house in Milverton Road, Erdington, at 9.30am on Monday.

A spokesman said the pensioner later died of her injuries.

A 53 year-old man, described by police as a relative, was arrested at the scene initially on suspicion of attempted murder.

He was detained in custody where he was being quizzed over the woman’s death.

Police confirmed a weapon had been recovered at the scene but declined to say what it was.

The property remained sealed off today and a lone officer was stationed at the door.

Forensics experts were expected to return to the scene on Tuesday. A post-mortem examination was also due to be carried out to determine the cause of death.

It is the second tragedy in Milverton Road in recent months.

In February, three-year-old Alia Ahmed Jama was found dead at a property in the street. Her mother, Iman Omar Yousef, 24, later appeared in court charged with her murder.

A police spokesman said: “Officers were called to reports of a 75 year-old woman who had been seriously assaulted. She was taken to hospital where she died of her injuries. A man was arrested at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries.”
