Friendly match: Dundee 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1
Striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake struck in the last minute to give Wolverhampton Wanderers the best possible start to their tour of Scotland.
With the game seemingly edging towards stalemate, last season’s top scorer was on the end of Matt Jarvis’ cross after good work by new signing Chris Iwelumo to give Wolves the victory after an entertaining friendly encounter at Dens Park.
It was a good work out for Mick McCarthy’s men and the Wolves boss took the opportunity to field two sides, one in each half.
The visitors enjoyed most of the attacking play in the opening minutes but it was former Molineux midfielder Colin Cameron who had the first opportunity, but he headed over.
Neill Collins headed wide after David Jones had floated a free-kick into the box as Wolves replied before Colin McMenamin hooked wide of Carl Ikeme’s far post when he survived an offside appeal as he ran onto Eric Paton’s low cross.
In the 15th minute, Jones did find the back of the Dundee net but his effort was ruled out when Sam Vokes was penalised for a push.
Mark Gilhaney wasted a good opportunity when he cut into the Wolves area and fired straight into the arms of Ikeme before, at the other end, Vokes powered a header wide after a cross from Kevin Foley.
Last-ditch clearances came to the rescue of both sides as the half drew to a close with Richard Stearman getting a foot to McHale’s low driven centre into the six-yard box, and Paton clearing at the expense of a corner as Vokes raced through on goal.
After the half-time changes, Kightly went close and then Iwelumo struck the post with a header.
In the closing minutes, Ebanks-Blake just failed to get a foot to Stephen Ward’s low cross, and Jarvis drove inches wide of the far post as he connected with a deep ball into the box from Mark Little, before Wolves eventually grabbed the winner.
