The transformation of Birmingham Eastside is moving up a gear following the appointment of masterplanners for a £250 million Learning and Leisure Quarter and Technology Park.

LDA Design - one of the country's best known urban architects - will unveil proposals for the 33-acre site by June.

Other major projects delivered by the company include the Rotherham Renaissance Vision, Warrington Town Centre and a strategy for development of sustainable communities along the Thames.

The Learning and Leisure Quarter and Technology Park will be the cornerstone of the £6 billion Eastside project and is expected to create 5,000 jobs.

LDA Design, based in Oxford, were appointed from more than 40 contenders by Advantage West Midlands and Birmingham City Council, following a design competition. More than 85 per cent of the land needed for the Learning and Leisure Quarter and Technology Park has been acquired.

Rosie Paskins, director for Birmingham and Solihull at AWM, said: "It is not often the chance to transform a large slice of an international city like Birmingham presents itself and we are delighted to welcome LDA on board, safe in the knowledge they will provide us with a design-led and deliverable master plan."

Bernie Foulkes, a partner of LDA, said: "The key aim is to turn Eastside into a great new piece of city."
