Sheridan Donavan was unsure of what to do when she left school and, attracted to Henley College Coventry’s “earn while you learn” apprenticeship programme, she decided to do a Business Administration apprenticeship. Sheriden works at Specsavers in Coventry and says she couldn’t have done it without the support she received from the college.

Sheridan’s transition from school to work wasn’t always an easy one, as she admits she was immensely shy at the beginning and found it difficult to talk to people. However, with the training from Henley College, support from her mentors and guidance from her colleagues at Specsavers, she is now a changed person.

“Henley College has helped in all aspects of my apprenticeship. When I first joined Specsavers I was positioned in the office but, after speaking with my mentors and managers, I asked to move to the shop floor, where I could have more contact with customers. I’ve now finished my NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration and looking forward to starting my Level 3.”

Greg Harding, manager of Specsavers Coventry, says: “We are always keen to take on apprentices from Henley College as the college pre-screens all the applications to a minimum standard and this saves me a great deal of time plus the standard of applicants is always very high.”

Specsavers were so impressed with Sheridan that they are now taking on another apprentice from Henley College to follow in her footsteps.

Sheridan added: “I really couldn’t have done it without Henley College, and I would recommend an apprenticeship to everyone.

“If I can do it, anyone can.”
